ABOUT HARVEST DISCIPLESHIP
WHO IS THIS FOR?
Anyone with a sincere desire to grow in their faith and obey the great commission — to make disciples (Mt. 28:19).
What type of people should lead?
A lot of Small Group Curriculum requires only a host or facilitator, but it takes a disciple to make disciples! Harvest Discipleship is a tool and the quality of the outcome depends on the leader and the desire of the participants to grow. Leaders don’t have to be perfect or have all the answers. They do need some maturity (not recent convert) and authenticity in their walk with Christ.
How do we get started?
There are several ways. This may be done as a churchwide emphasis (sermons are available), provided by a Small Group coordinator, or by an individual. Pray about those you need to disciple. Invite them to join, let them know the purpose and requirements, pick a time and ask them to guard that time.
What are the requirements?
There are minor changes in each plan, but basically the following. (1) Do the workbook lesson each week and be ready to share your responses. (2) Focus your mind on the Lord and His truth daily by doing the following: five days a week, read at least 2 chapters daily from the Bible (there’s a plan in the book, or the member can continue their own plan). (3) Attend the weekly meetings.
How should we organize meeting time?
There are several parts of the meeting. Discussion of the lesson, personal sharing, prayer, insights from the leader. Early on discussion of the lesson will probably take up most of the meeting. As the group gets to know each other better, you’ll need more time for personal sharing and prayer. The leader will need to let the Spirit lead them in this. When you feel more time is needed for sharing and prayer, start with them and only discuss the main points of the lesson, and share with the group what was most important. The lessons are powerful but the book is a tool, so lean on guidance from the Holy Spirit.
What if someone doesn’t do the lessons or is habitually absent?
Encourage them privately to participate. If they continue not to, they should try something else for growth. Most church groups have no outside work or attendance requirement. The group needs to encourage each other by their participation.
What if someone monopolizes the meeting?
Talk to them about helping you get more people to participate. Ask others by name to respond in the lesson. If it continues, meet with them apart from the group to discuss the problem.
